Free Your Artist

"You must not for one instant give up the effort to build new lives for yourselves. Creativity means to push open the heavy, groaning doorway to life. This is not an easy struggle. Indeed, it may be the most difficult task in the world, for opening the door to your own life is, in the end, more difficult than opening the doors to the mysteries of the universe."

—Daisaku Ikeda

Creativity Exercise - Doors

I've used the labyrinth in past Decembers and consider them a journey, a path. But often you have to go through a door to reach the right path, or even a mental door to meditatively walk the labyrinth. So this exercise deals with doors.

Picture your ideal door and express it artistically.

If you had an imaginary door to the best place in the world, where would it open to? Is that door a different door than your ideal door? Is it white cast iron curlicues opening onto a beach? Or a wooden door into a castle? Or a small gate to a garden?

Behind what kind of door is your worst fear? Your greatest hope?

Think of doors and paths and journeys this month as we leave one year behind and walk into a new one.
